#NOSTEREOTYPES: gender stereotypes and representation in the media

DRAG ME UP Queer Art Festival // SECOND EDITION

This project is the winner of the
“Contemporaneamente Roma 2020 – 2021 – 2022” public competition

The QUEER world is placed at the centre of the contemporary scene with all its strength and expressive value: Drag, Pop, Performing Art, Cabaret, Stand-up comedy, Theatre… an event in which Raffaella Carrà’s graceful dance moves coexist with the works of Bertold Brecht, the showgirl and the diva, the words of great authors and the experiences of a life packed with meaning.

A colourful and tongue-in-cheek universe of images that interact with other images, of songs that become stories, of voices torn from one context only to be made blossom brighter than before in another.

#NOSTEREOTYPES

THE THEME OF THE SECOND EDITION OF DRAG ME UP IS:

#NOSTEREOTYPES: gender stereotypes and representation in the media

A journey marked by physical effort, as well as technical and interpretative ability.

A poetic voyage of great sensitivity undertaken to spread messages of positivity, which are sure to go viral.

The project involves various aspects of the performing arts that will employ different modes of expression to lead the spectator and the artists themselves along a carefully planned path that is marked by an awareness of the VALUES OF INCLUSION, which are founding values for our contemporary society.

Therefore, this path is made up of the various events in the project that are closely linked to each other. Together, these events will lead to a comprehensive knowledge of the LGBTIQ+ world.

A study by ISTAT (Italian National Institute of Statistics) from 25/11/2019 highlights how gender stereotypes in Italy today still characterise everyday life and how they significantly influence interpersonal relationships.

Each event will, therefore, have the task of creating different, divergent perspectives, in order to create a new outlook and new points of view, which will influence and create a society that goes beyond the concept of gender itself and the very idea of a gender stereotype. The media is an accomplice of these outdated concepts but, at the same time, it can be used as an ally to help undermine those very same points of view. With this in mind, each section of the festival will have a specific purpose and responsibility to create new levels of awareness.
